Gather & Nourish
The “Gather and Nourish” initiative is a monthly community dinner series designed to support young Black women and gender-diverse people in Ottawa who are survivors of gender-based violence to come together in community, heal through Afro-Caribbean food, and grow as leaders through shared cooking, storytelling, and care. Through this project, we aim to create a safe and empowering space where participants can come together to share culturally relevant meals, engage in wellness activities, and connect with community wellness leaders. The focus is on food sovereignty, as we aim to reclaim control over the food we consume and the nourishment it provides. This initiative also addresses the issue of social isolation that many Black women and girls face. By offering a space for community building, we foster a sense of belonging, healing, and collective care, which is vital for strengthening mental and emotional well-being. The project celebrates Black culture and focuses on healing within a collective setting, allowing individuals to connect and support one another in a meaningful way. Ultimately, “Gather and Nourish” aims to reduce isolation, promote food sovereignty, and provide a platform for Black women and girls to share their experiences and heal together. Registration opens in fall 2025.
